Despite nearing 39 years old, Rohit’s hunger for scoring runs remains undiminished, having previously led Mumbai to five IPL titles before handing over the captaincy to Hardik Pandya in 2024.
Similar to Kohli, who focuses on the 50-overs format for India, Rohit has entered the IPL determined to reaffirm his status as a significant match-winner. Coach Mahela Jayawardene noted Rohit’s liberated mindset, attributing it to reduced leadership responsibilities, which has allowed him to play with more ease and intuition, evident in his recent performance of scoring 78 runs off 38 balls in a successful chase of 221 runs.
Having spent time honing his skills in practice matches after his last competitive appearance in January during India’s one-day series against New Zealand, Rohit arrived for the current IPL season visibly trimmer and in better physical shape. Jayawardene praised Rohit’s preparation and form, highlighting his 50th 50-plus score in the IPL as a testament to his batting brilliance.
In a separate match, Kohli delivered a stellar unbeaten half-century for Royal Challengers Bangalore, guiding them to a convincing victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad the day before Rohit’s standout performance.
