“India’s Green Tribunal Approves Great Nicobar Infrastructure Project”

-

India’s environmental court has approved the Great Nicobar infrastructure project, which holds strategic significance, despite concerns about potential harm to the island’s ecology in the Andaman Sea. The National Green Tribunal has rejected several petitions opposing the large-scale project on the environmentally sensitive Great Nicobar island, stating that adequate measures have been considered. The proposed infrastructure development includes the construction of a transshipment port, airport, power plant, and township on the island, situated near the Strait of Malacca, a major global shipping route. The government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to invest substantial funds to integrate the island into international trade networks, following the initial environmental clearances granted in 2022. Describing the project as crucial for strategic, defense, and national interests, India’s environment minister emphasized its importance in September.
