“Elderly Cattle Breeder’s Lasting Legacy at Gabtoli Market”

-

An elderly cattle breeder from Kushtia is seated on a plastic bag next to three medium-sized cows, engaging with interested buyers. Each year, he brings a significant number of sacrificial animals to the market, and by the fifth day, only three remain, which he diligently watches over. A potential buyer attempts to negotiate a price for one of the prized cows, but disappointed, onlookers continue their search for the perfect cow at the right price without engaging in conversation.

Despite the late hour of 2 a.m., the market is bustling with activity as trucks from distant parts of the country continuously bring in new livestock to replace the sold animals. The atmosphere is filled with the mingling scents of wet hay, sweat, cigarettes, and dung.

Numerous animals, including cows, buffaloes, goats, lambs, and even camels, are spread out in rows across the ground. The larger and more valuable animals are sheltered under tin shades or enjoy the breeze of table fans. Some prized bulls even attract crowds for photos and social media shares. However, most animals are left exposed, tethered tightly to bamboo posts, restricting their movement.

The scene at Dhaka’s largest cattle market in Gabtoli is a familiar sight, evoking a sense of tradition and nostalgia for visitors. Navigating through the crowded market is challenging, with the constant risk of being caught between animals or suddenly encountering a loose cow. Visitors must tread carefully as the animals are weary and easily agitated.

The market is not only visually stimulating but also a symphony of sounds. The constant noise of buyers negotiating prices, traders boasting about their animals, and brokers interrupting conversations fills the air. Amidst the chaos, the moans of cows and bleats of goats add to the cacophony.

Recently, Gabtoli market has embraced the digital age with TikTokers, vloggers, and content creators capturing the essence of the market online. For many, visiting Gabtoli is more than just a transaction; it is a cherished tradition passed down through generations, synonymous with the spirit of Eid ul Adha.

While there are numerous cattle markets in Dhaka, Gabtoli holds a special place in the hearts of many, offering a unique experience that cannot be replicated elsewhere. The market has evolved with the times, attracting both traditional buyers and those opting for online purchases.

For some, the convenience of online shopping may overshadow the traditional experience of visiting Gabtoli market, but the memories and emotions tied to this cultural ritual remain deeply ingrained in the fabric of Eid celebrations.
