The Bangladesh Police Service Association has called on the government to rethink its decision to alter the police uniform, citing widespread disapproval among officers and emphasizing the need for thorough research and public input.
In a released statement, the association highlighted that the traditional khaki uniform, which had been revamped in 2003-2004 following meticulous assessment by a dedicated committee, took into account factors such as officers’ skin tone, local weather conditions, visibility requirements for day and night shifts, and the imperative to avoid uniform resemblance with other security entities.
The association criticized the interim government, which has since been dissolved, for overlooking crucial considerations like officers’ skin tones and weather adaptability when selecting the new uniform. It was noted that the absence of public consultation led to the adoption of a new uniform that closely resembled attire worn by other agencies, potentially hindering the swift identification of police personnel in operational settings.
Expressing significant reservations, the association underscored that the majority of police personnel view the “current uniform” as emblematic of the force’s enduring traditions, discipline, and professionalism. The association commended the outstanding performance of officers during the 13th national parliamentary election on February 12, 2026, where they diligently fulfilled their duties while donning the existing uniform, contributing to the successful conduct of the polls, which garnered praise nationally and internationally.
Additionally, the association warned against the financial implications of a uniform change, cautioning that such a move could strain the country’s economy. It proposed reallocating resources towards enhancing the force’s modernization efforts, providing adequate vehicular support at police stations, and reinforcing logistical capabilities, instead of investing in new uniforms.
Emphasizing that the core issue lies in bolstering the mindset, morale, and professionalism of police personnel, the association stressed the unwavering commitment of every Bangladesh Police member to upholding their responsibilities with utmost dedication.
The association urged the government to revisit the uniform decision, advocating for a pragmatic approach informed by comprehensive research and public feedback, while respecting the sentiments and practical considerations of the force members.
