“Opposition Parties Walk Out as ‘Anti-People’ Bills Pass”

-

The opposition parties exited the parliamentary session today, citing the passage of what they deemed as “anti-people” legislation despite their protests. Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-E-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman expressed disappointment over the approval of several bills despite their objections and announced the opposition’s decision to walk out of the parliament at approximately 5:55 pm.

Up to that point, the parliament had endorsed 24 bills, validating ordinances put forth by the interim government. These bills encompassed various areas such as judicial appointments, human rights, sports governance, energy regulation, procurement processes, labor laws, and local government amendments.

Among the bills passed were legislative measures like the Jatiya Muktijhoddha Council (Amendment) Bill, Land Use Control and Agricultural Land Protection Bill, and several others related to telecommunications, gas regulation, organ transplantation, human trafficking, and forest conservation.

Despite raising objections, particularly against bills like the Supreme Court Judges Appointment (Repeal) Bill, Supreme Court Secretariat (Repeal) Bill, and National Human Rights Commission (Repeal and Reinstatement) Bill, the opposition members re-entered the parliamentary session around 6:55 pm.
