At least seven individuals sustained injuries during a confrontation between supporters of Islami Chhatra Shibir and affiliated groups of BNP in Karnaphuli upazila of Chattogram last evening, as reported by the authorities. Four of the injured were hospitalized at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), as per law enforcement officials.
The hospitalized individuals include Md Shahed Alam Titu, a member of Karnaphuli upazila Jubo Dal; Md Monjur, joint convener of Barouthan union Krishak Dal; Md Imon, a leader of Barouthan union Jubo Dal; and Md Faruk, joint convener of Barouthan union Sramik Dal. Police sources indicated that the clash stemmed from a disagreement related to the national election that took place on February 12.
On the election day, a confrontation erupted between the two factions at Dighir Par Government Primary School polling center, which was later diffused by army and police personnel. Subsequently, the same groups engaged in a clash in the Barouthan area post 9:30 pm last night, following an intense verbal exchange.
Jamal Uddin Chowdhury, assistant commissioner (AC) of the Karnaphuli Zone of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, informed The Daily Star that the groups resorted to attacking each other due to the earlier election-related conflict. The injured were rushed to CMCH and the upazila health complex before the arrival of law enforcement at the scene. One individual was apprehended by the police in connection with the incident, while no formal complaint had been lodged at the time of reporting.
