Veteran Actress Nuton Decries Lack of Recognition for Senior Artists

-

Veteran actress Nuton has expressed deep sadness regarding the lack of attention given to senior artists in the entertainment industry, noting that many are overlooked while still alive. She shared her sentiments during an iftar event organized by the Bangladesh Film Artistes Association (BFAA) last Friday. Reuniting with her colleagues after a prolonged period brought her great joy, but when inquired about her well-being, Nuton paused before replying.

“I am physically present, yet I feel invisible,” she expressed. “People invite me to occasional functions, inquire about my well-being, and then the connection fades.” Nuton disclosed that her husband, filmmaker Ruhul Amin Babul, passed away in December. She mentioned receiving minimal support or concern from industry peers during this challenging time. “No one even bothered to ask how I was coping,” she lamented, describing it as a significant personal disappointment.

Reflecting on her 52-year career in the film industry, Nuton questioned the recurring trend in the lives of artists. She highlighted that acknowledgment often surfaces only posthumously. “When we depart, newspapers publish our photos and praise our work. Why is this recognition absent during our lifetime?” she pondered.

Discussing her late husband’s contributions as a producer, director, and member of the James Group, Nuton stated that he had made substantial impacts on the industry. Nonetheless, she pointed out the lack of visits from colleagues during his illness and the limited attendance at his funeral.

“People label you as a friend when you are alive. Once you are gone, the support diminishes,” Nuton remarked. She urged the industry to value and celebrate the contributions of artists, directors, and producers not only after their demise but also throughout their lives.
