The Nigerian defense ministry revealed on Monday that approximately 100 US soldiers are being sent to Nigeria as part of enhanced military collaboration to combat insecurity in the country. While the ministry did not specify the exact arrival date of the “US military trainers,” they are expected to be deployed soon.
According to a statement by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), the United States military personnel and their equipment have landed at Bauchi Airfield. This deployment follows a formal request made by the Federal Government of Nigeria to the US government for assistance in military training, technical support, and intelligence sharing with the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Nigeria is currently grappling with various security challenges, including a prolonged jihadist insurgency in the northeast, conflicts between farmers and herders in the north-central regions, separatist violence in the southeast, and incidents of kidnappings for ransom in the northwest.
While US President Donald Trump has alleged that Christians in Nigeria are facing persecution and genocide at the hands of terrorists, the Nigerian capital, Abuja, and the majority of independent experts argue that the violence in Nigeria affects both Christians and Muslims without discrimination.
