At a recent global AI summit in India, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a cautionary message to technology leaders about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. He stressed the importance of not allowing the destiny of AI to be dictated solely by a select group of wealthy individuals.
Guterres urged tech magnates to back a $3 billion worldwide fund aimed at ensuring equal access to the rapidly advancing technology. Emphasizing that AI should be a universal resource, he underscored the need for inclusive decision-making processes regarding its development.
Highlighting the dual nature of AI, Guterres acknowledged its capacity to accelerate progress in various sectors such as healthcare, education, food security, climate change mitigation, disaster preparedness, and public services. However, he also pointed out the risk of exacerbating inequality, perpetuating biases, and causing harm if not managed properly.
To address these concerns, the UN has established an AI scientific advisory panel to assist nations in navigating the implications of this transformative technology. Guterres advocated for safeguarding individuals against exploitation, particularly emphasizing the protection of children from being subjected to unregulated AI experimentation.
He called for the implementation of global regulatory frameworks to ensure transparency and accountability in AI deployment, proposing the establishment of a “Global Fund on AI” to enhance fundamental capabilities. Guterres revealed a fundraising target of $3 billion for this initiative, addressing a diverse audience comprising world leaders and prominent tech executives like Sam Altman from OpenAI and Sundar Pichai from Google.
