“Trump Sets Ultimatum as Iran-Israel Conflict Escalates”

-

Iran is facing a critical deadline set by President Donald Trump to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz or risk a significant US attack on power facilities. Meanwhile, Israel has indicated its intentions for a potential ground incursion into Lebanon, evident by the destruction of a crucial bridge in its pursuit to dismantle Hezbollah, a Shia Muslim group supported by Iran.

In response to Iran’s actions in the oil-rich Gulf that have led to escalating fuel prices, Trump has issued a stark ultimatum threatening to destroy Iran’s power plants if it fails to lift its partial blockade of the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. The deadline, as per Trump’s social media announcement, falls at 23:44 GMT, early Tuesday in Iran and Monday evening in Washington.

Iran’s military command has defiantly vowed to retaliate by targeting Israel’s power infrastructure, energy facilities, and communication technology assets, along with power stations in neighboring countries hosting US installations and firms with American stakeholders. They warned that any attack on Iran’s power infrastructure would result in the complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz until the damaged facilities are reconstructed, a process that could span several years.

Amidst the ongoing tensions, exiled Iranians sympathetic to the conflict have expressed rare concerns. Reza Pahlavi, son of the deposed shah during the 1979 Islamic revolution, urged Washington and Israel to focus their efforts on dismantling oppressive structures while safeguarding Iran’s critical civilian infrastructure necessary for the nation’s reconstruction.

Trump’s shifting statements on the duration and objectives of the conflict have added uncertainty. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has outlined plans for a prolonged campaign against Iran’s government, emphasizing a sustained effort against Hamas, a group responsible for a major attack against Israel in 2023.

The situation has escalated with Israel conducting operations in Lebanon, targeting infrastructure used by Hezbollah. Lebanon has witnessed significant casualties and displacements in the wake of Israeli strikes, drawing condemnation from Lebanese officials and warnings of a potential ground invasion.

Despite Israel’s claims of successful strikes on Iranian military sites, Iranian missiles managed to reach Israeli territories, causing injuries and prompting fears among civilians. The conflict has seen retaliatory strikes and counterattacks, with both sides sustaining damages and casualties.

Global oil prices have surged, reflecting the instability in the region as Iran considers imposing tolls on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The prolonged conflict poses economic risks, with industry experts warning of severe repercussions if the situation persists beyond a six-month timeframe, impacting economies worldwide.
