In a group chat reviewed by AFP on Friday, a seafarer reported an attack while navigating the Strait of Hormuz, the critical passage that has been blocked for weeks due to US-Israeli actions sparking a conflict with Iran. The sailor, communicating in Chinese via the messaging platform WeChat, shared the dangers faced by sailors stranded in the Gulf since the onset of the conflict, representing various nationalities.
The disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for oil transport from the Gulf region, has caused upheaval in global markets, triggering concerns of prolonged spikes in energy prices. The sailor recounted being aboard the “Ocean Pretty,” a bulk carrier flying the Barbadian flag, which purportedly came under gunfire and rocket launcher assaults while attempting to traverse the strait.
While AFP could not independently confirm the attack on the vessel, the sailor assured that no crew members sustained injuries during the incident. The seafarers engaged in the conversation exhibited solidarity, with one remarking on their resilience, highlighting the risks and challenges faced during maritime journeys.
The damaged vessel currently remains immobilized near the southern Iranian city of Bandar Abbas, awaiting inspection, as indicated by the sailor. Tracking data from the MarineTraffic website confirmed the ship’s location off Bandar Abbas as of Friday. The sailor expressed surprise at the lack of prior warning regarding the alleged attack on their ship.
Amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, questions linger about the timeline for reopening the strait, prompting uncertainties among the sailors. Notably, a portion of the ships that managed to pass through the strait recently had Chinese ownership or registration, according to Bridget Diakun, an analyst at Lloyd’s List Intelligence.
Reflecting on their journey through the strait, the sailor mentioned raising three Chinese flags onboard, cautioning against recklessness and emphasizing safety above all else. Within the conversation, sailors deliberated on the risks involved, considering potential incentives offered by their companies for successful voyages.
In discussions about financial rewards, one sailor posed a hypothetical scenario regarding a substantial bonus, prompting a reminder from another participant about the paramount importance of preserving one’s life. The sailors collectively acknowledged the challenges ahead, emphasizing the need for caution and prudence in navigating through the conflict-ridden waters.
