Police have apprehended a prominent member of the Sakhipur upazila Awami League today for his alleged involvement in setting ablaze a bus on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Baoi Khola, located in Tangail’s Basail upazila last November. The arrested individual, identified as Jahid Iqbal Jahangir, holds the position of joint general secretary within the Sakhipur Municipality unit of the Awami League, as per police sources.
Reports from both law enforcement officials and eyewitnesses indicate that Jahangir recently participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Central Shaheed Minar in Sakhipur on February 21 on behalf of the Sakhipur upazila AL and Muktijoddha Sontan Sangsad.
According to Officer-in-Charge Helal Uddin from Sakhipur Police Station, Jahangir was apprehended at the Uttara intersection within the Sakhipur municipality and subsequently transferred to the custody of Basail Police Station for further proceedings.
Basail Police Station’s OC Alamgir Kabir disclosed that unknown perpetrators set fire to a passenger bus in the Baoi Khola area of Basail upazila around 1:00 am on November 12, 2025. Tragically, a female passenger sustained injuries during the incident and succumbed to her injuries six days later while receiving medical treatment.
In response to the incident, Gorai Highway Police SI Ismail Hossain lodged a case against multiple unidentified suspects at the Basail station the following day. OC Kabir confirmed that Jahangir has now been arrested as a suspect in connection with the case and has been presented before the court for further legal proceedings.
