Prime Minister Tarique Rahman wasted no time in pushing forward with three significant promises made by his party. In a proactive move on his second day as prime minister, Tarique directed relevant ministers to promptly execute the party’s election commitments. The three key pledges involve the Family Card program, a nationwide tree planting campaign, and the excavation and re-excavation of canals.
During two inter-ministerial meetings at the Secretariat, Tarique emphasized the importance of swift and effective implementation of these promises outlined in the BNP’s election manifesto. He stressed the need for setting clear timelines, establishing accountability mechanisms, and maintaining transparency to avoid any controversy or negative public perception.
The Family Card initiative aims to benefit 5 crore families, with a special focus on women. The program is set to kick off on a trial basis in eight upazilas across different divisions before Eid-ul-Fitr. To oversee the initiative, a 15-member body named the “Cabinet Committee on the Provision of the Family Card” has been formed, led by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury. The committee’s responsibilities include finalizing beneficiary selection, ensuring a proper rollout, and integrating existing social safety net programs.
The government also plans to plant 25 crore trees over the next five years, starting in May. Although this year’s target might be affected by a shortage of saplings, efforts are underway to assess available stocks. Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo assured that if this year’s tree planting target falls short, adjustments will be made for the following year.
Additionally, the government aims to excavate and re-excavate 20,000 kilometers of canals, rivers, and water bodies nationwide. The initial phase is slated to commence in Dhaka, with joint oversight from multiple ministries.
Prime Minister Tarique’s proactive approach was evident as he traveled from his residence to the Secretariat, stopping at traffic signals where pedestrians greeted him warmly. Upon his arrival at the Secretariat, he promptly inquired about the presence of ministers, secretaries, and officials in their offices.
