Four days have passed since Pir Abdur Rahman Shamim was brutally killed in Kushtia’s Daulatpur upazila, and the police have yet to apprehend any of the four suspects named in connection with the incident. Two of the accused individuals have links to Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir.
The 52-year-old pir, Abdur Rahman Shamim, was attacked and murdered by a group of 300 to 400 individuals at his shrine in Philipnagar on April 11. The assault was triggered by allegations of blasphemy, resulting in the death of Shamim and injuries to two others.
Following the tragic event, Shamim’s brother, Fazlur Rahman, lodged a complaint with Daulatpur Police Station, accusing four identified individuals and 180-200 unidentified persons.
The named suspects include Khaja Ahmed, a former president of the Kushtia district unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir and a member of Jamaat; Rajib Mistri, a Jamaat activist; Asaduzzaman Asad, the President of Khelafat Majlish’s Daulatpur upazila unit; and Safi, a madrasa teacher from Abeder Ghat. Arifur Rahman, the officer-in-charge of Daulatpur Police Station, mentioned that the perpetrators had gone into hiding post the crime, but efforts are underway to locate and apprehend them.
Meanwhile, leaders from Jamaat’s Kushtia town unit convened a press briefing at a local restaurant, alleging that their party members had been falsely implicated as part of a larger conspiracy.
Locals and followers of Shamim organized a protest and formed a human chain in Daulatpur’s Darogar Mor area on Tuesday, demanding swift arrest and prosecution of the culprits responsible for the heinous attack.
