“McCullum and Stokes Deny Rift, Ready for Third Test”

-

England coach Brendon McCullum has brushed off rumors of a rift with Test captain Ben Stokes, finding amusement in the suggestions that their relationship had deteriorated. Stokes is poised to make a comeback for the upcoming third Test against New Zealand, joining fast bowler Gus Atkinson after a disciplinary hearing. Both players had faced suspension from the second Test due to a breach of curfew at a London nightclub and their involvement in an incident with a Saracens rugby player following England’s first-Test victory.

During Stokes’ absence, England suffered a substantial 253-run defeat at The Oval, resulting in a tied series against New Zealand. McCullum, who had previously faced inquiries about his rapport with Stokes following a 4-1 Ashes loss in Australia, clarified on Tuesday that there was no validity to the reports. “I asked him if he knew the source of the conversations surrounding our relationship over the past six months, and he had no clue. I assured him that I value our friendship,” McCullum informed the press.

Having collaborated closely with Stokes since assuming leadership of the Test side in 2022, McCullum emphasized the strong partnership that had reshaped England’s red-ball cricket strategy. Despite recent setbacks, McCullum expressed confidence that the team’s progress would not be derailed. “Working alongside Ben has been an honor over the last four years. We have a strong bond as a team and as partners. External factors do not affect our relationship; Ben and I are united,” McCullum stated.

In the upcoming third Test at Trent Bridge, England aims to secure the series victory, with their last Test series win occurring 18 months ago against New Zealand in 2024.
