Both players had faced suspension from the second Test due to a breach of curfew at a London nightclub and their involvement in an incident with a Saracens rugby player following England’s first-Test victory.
During Stokes’ absence, England suffered a substantial 253-run defeat at The Oval, resulting in a tied series against New Zealand. McCullum, who had previously faced inquiries about his rapport with Stokes following a 4-1 Ashes loss in Australia, clarified on Tuesday that there was no validity to the reports. “I asked him if he knew the source of the conversations surrounding our relationship over the past six months, and he had no clue. I assured him that I value our friendship,” McCullum informed the press.
Having collaborated closely with Stokes since assuming leadership of the Test side in 2022, McCullum emphasized the strong partnership that had reshaped England’s red-ball cricket strategy.
