“Health Ministry Warns of TB Risks at Ramadan Bazaars”

-

As Malaysians gather at Ramadan bazaars and for iftar meals, the Health Ministry urges the public to be vigilant about tuberculosis (TB) prevention, particularly in crowded and enclosed settings. A recent statement by the ministry revealed that 596 new TB cases were reported nationwide in the sixth epidemiological week, bringing the total number of cases to 3,161 across the country.

The ministry emphasized that the risk of TB transmission is higher in crowded and poorly ventilated spaces, especially in the presence of individuals with untreated active TB. While Ramadan itself does not cause TB transmission, increased social interactions during the month can elevate exposure risks, the statement highlighted.

Community awareness and proactive measures play a crucial role in early detection, effective treatment, and prevention of TB spread, the ministry stressed. In contrast to influenza or Covid-19, TB spreads more slowly and typically requires prolonged and repeated exposure.

To mitigate the risk, the public is advised to follow proper cough and sneeze etiquette, ensure adequate indoor ventilation, wear masks when symptomatic or in crowded areas, and seek medical attention for persistent coughs lasting over two weeks or other TB-related symptoms.

The breakdown of TB cases by region shows Sabah leading with 755 cases, followed by Selangor (596 cases) and Sarawak (332 cases). Johor reported 280 cases, while Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya collectively recorded 244 cases. Kedah had 181 cases, Penang 172, and Perak 154. Kelantan reported 121 cases, Pahang 103, Terengganu 74, and Negeri Sembilan 62. Melaka had 48 cases, Perlis 21, and Labuan the lowest at 18 cases.
