Former BRAC Executive Director Salehuddin Ahmed Dies at 79

Salehuddin Ahmed, a former BRAC executive director and ex-pro vice-chancellor of BRAC University, has passed away in the United States during medical treatment. He was 79 years old. His demise occurred at 11:00 am yesterday, according to Bangladesh time. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and numerous well-wishers.

Apart from his roles at BRAC, Salehuddin also served as the former managing editor of The Daily Star. After obtaining his PhD in Ukraine in 1978, he returned to Bangladesh and commenced his career as a research officer at the Planning Commission. Joining BRAC on April 4, 1979, as an executive assistant, he remained with the organization until 2004. Subsequently, from 2005 to 2009, he held the position of pro vice-chancellor at BRAC University and was actively involved as a member of BRAC’s General Body.

BRAC has expressed profound sorrow over Salehuddin’s passing. In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the organization conveyed its heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and well-wishers. Salehuddin’s extensive experience in development studies, poverty alleviation, and educational advancement has significantly contributed to Bangladesh’s progress. The statement further highlighted his close professional relationship with BRAC’s founder, Fazle Hasan Abed, which greatly enriched the organization’s journey.
