All classes and exams at Mymensingh Medical College have been halted for a week following a clash between two factions of Chhatra Dal in one of the dormitories, resulting in severe injuries to two students. Both male and female students have been directed to leave the dorms by 8:00 am today, as confirmed by Prof Dr. Md Nazmul Alam Khan, the college principal. The decisions were made at an urgent meeting of the academic council held early today in response to the injuries sustained during the clash.
Md Abdullah Al Mamun, the additional superintendent (admin) of police in Mymensingh, verified that the altercation occurred between two Chhatra Dal factions around 9:00 pm at the college dormitory in the Baghmara area of the city. The injured students, identified as Md Muaz and Mir Hamidur, both third-year students, are affiliated with rival groups within the Chhatra Dal college unit, according to police and campus sources.
According to reports from the campus, the clash started when Muaz entered Hamidur’s room, leading to a dispute over refueling a motorcycle that quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. Hamidur and his associates allegedly assaulted Muaz, ultimately forcing him out of the room. Subsequently, when Hamidur stepped out for tea, he was attacked and struck on the head with a steel pipe. The situation further escalated when Muaz sought refuge in a room, prompting a pursuit and counter-pursuit between the two factions, resulting in the clash.
Law enforcement promptly intervened to restore order at the scene. The injured students were promptly admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), according to the additional SP. Muaz was later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care, while Hamidur remains under treatment at MMCH.
Mohammad Shebirul Islam, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Model Police Station, assured that the situation is now under control. Nafiul Islam, aged 25, has been apprehended in connection with the incident, although no formal charges have been filed as of yet.
The incident is currently under investigation, as stated by the OC. Concurrently, the college authorities have established a three-member investigative committee, led by Prof Dr. Seheli Zannat Sultana from the Anatomy Department, to probe the clash. The committee has been tasked with submitting its findings within seven business days, according to the college principal.
In contrast to claims of a factional clash, Tanvir Abdullah, the JCD unit convener at Mymensingh Medical College, refuted the notion and suggested that the incident might have stemmed from personal animosity. He further indicated that the central committee is overseeing the investigation into the incident.
