Bangladesh’s new administration, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening connections with African nations, notably Senegal, according to State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam. Obaed made these statements while engaging in a one-on-one discussion with Cheikh Niang, the Senegalese Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs, and Senegalese Abroad, on the fringes of the recent Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa in Dakar.
During the meeting, Obaed reminisced about President Ziaur Rahman’s groundbreaking trip to Senegal in March 1981, accompanied by Khaleda Zia, which marked the inaugural visit by a Bangladeshi head of state to Senegal. She also briefed Minister Niang on Bangladesh’s recent general elections, emphasizing the mandate of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The two ministers reached a consensus to conduct foreign office discussions promptly to bolster bilateral relations through increased political dialogue and expanded cooperation across various sectors. Obaed underscored the significance of establishing a mutual trade commission and facilitating the exchange of business delegations to elevate bilateral trade and investment. She highlighted Bangladesh’s expertise in industries such as ready-made garments, textiles, pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding, leather, raw jute, and ICT, proposing an extension of collaboration into agriculture and agro-processing.
Minister Niang conveyed Senegal’s gratitude for Bangladesh’s involvement in peacekeeping and peacebuilding endeavors in Africa, affirming his nation’s willingness to collaborate closely with Bangladesh in international forums. Furthermore, both sides explored the prospect of establishing permanent diplomatic missions in each other’s capitals.
Obaed extended an invitation to the Senegalese foreign minister to visit Bangladesh, which he accepted, expressing his intent to do so at a mutually agreeable time. Sadia Faizunnesa, Bangladesh’s ambassador to Morocco and the nominated ambassador to Senegal, accompanied the state minister during the discussions.
Later in the day, the state minister engaged with local media channels, including Le Soleil and Senegalese National Television, where she highlighted the efforts of the BNP-led government in advancing peace, development, and stability, with a specific emphasis on promoting women’s welfare.
