BotTala Theatre Group is approaching a significant milestone as its well-received production, “Khona,” is gearing up for its 100th performance, more than ten years since its debut. The play originally premiered on March 8, 2010, at Dhaka’s Central Shaheed Minar and has since steadily progressed towards this noteworthy achievement.
In a nod to its origins, BotTala has selected the Shaheed Minar as the venue for the 100th show, scheduled for April 11. To commemorate this occasion, the theatre group has organized a two-day festival at the Shaheed Minar on April 10 and 11, featuring diverse cultural and community events.
The festivities will kick off with a chemical-free agricultural products fair starting at 10 am on April 10, offering a variety of organic food items sourced from different regions of the country. Additionally, children will participate in the “Matir Pathshala” (Clay School) to learn clay artistry and engage in group performances.
The agricultural fair will resume on the morning of April 11, leading up to the 100th staging of “Khona” at 7 pm. Following the performance, the cast and crew members involved in the production will be recognized for their contributions. An exhibition titled “Khona Through the Audience’s Camera” will also be part of the festival, showcasing photographs taken by audience members during various showings. The top 10 photographs will be awarded.
“Khona” delves into themes of women’s rights and social class disparities, drawing attention to issues that echo through the ages despite its ancient origins. The play sheds light on the internal barriers women often face when venturing outside their households and explores the enduring agricultural wisdom associated with Khona’s legacy.
Authored by Samina Luthfa Nitra and directed by Mohammad Ali Haider, the play features a talented cast including Kazi Roksana Ruma, Evan Riaz, Imran Khan Munna, Taufique Hassan, Mizanur Rahman, Sheyuti Shahgufta, Kamaruzzaman Saeed, Hafiza Akter, Chandan Pal, and Abdul Kader in various roles.
