“Ducsu Faces Backlash Despite Student Welfare Programs”

-

In the initial four months of leading the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu), the panel supported by Islami Chhatra Shibir implemented various programs for the welfare of Dhaka University students. Despite this, some leaders faced backlash for their actions on campus.

Utilizing its allocated budget, Ducsu conducted seminars and workshops on career advancement, research, and skill enhancement. The union also provided legal assistance to 119 students dealing with cyber harassment and disputes since September of the previous year, as detailed in Ducsu’s recent four-month report.

Ducsu officials successfully advocated for the allocation of Tk 5.5 crore for the refurbishment of old dormitories susceptible to earthquakes and an additional Tk 50 lakh for the enhancement of the DU central mosque. They also championed the introduction of an evening bus service for nonresident students and pushed for an online subscription system at the central library to enhance its resources.

However, the positive strides of Ducsu were overshadowed by the conduct of certain leaders who were criticized for their involvement in incidents such as teacher harassment and unwarranted campus enforcement activities. In recent months, some Ducsu leaders partook in initiatives to remove makeshift shops and destitute individuals from the campus.

On a specific occasion, students led by Ducsu Social Welfare Secretary AB Zubair harassed three teachers affiliated with the pro-Awami League “Neel Dal” faction. The altercation ensued after the teachers sought permission from the Vice-Chancellor to resume teaching duties. Video footage circulating on social media captured students confronting one of the teachers, prompting public outcry.

Another controversial incident involved Ducsu leader Sarba Mitra Chakma, who was filmed coercing a group of boys to perform physical exercises at the DU central playground. Following criticism, Mitra initially announced his resignation but later rescinded the decision due to student support.

Former Ducsu General Secretary Mustaq Hossain condemned the actions of the leaders, emphasizing that assaults on individuals, regardless of their background, are unacceptable. Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan, the Ducsu President and DU Vice-Chancellor, reiterated that student safety is a top priority and emphasized the need to address allegations through proper channels.

Despite Ducsu claiming credit for certain projects in its report, some achievements were inaccurately attributed to the students’ union, as confirmed by DU officials. Ducsu highlighted its role in the construction of Bangladesh-China Moitree Hall and the allocation of funds for DU infrastructure improvement, but these initiatives were already in progress before the Ducsu election.

When questioned, Ducsu General Secretary SM Farhad defended the claims, stating that the union’s advocacy expedited the approval process for these projects. He clarified that Ducsu facilitated private sponsorships for student initiatives and operated transparently by submitting bills for reimbursement rather than handling cash directly.

Regarding Ducsu funds, Treasurer Prof HM Mosharraf Hossain disclosed that DU allocated Tk 25 lakh to Ducsu for organizational activities but prohibited spending on development projects. The funds are earmarked for seminars, conferences, and workshops aimed at benefitting the student body.
