“BTS Releases ‘ARIRANG’ Album: A Tribute to Korean Heritage”

-

After an extensive four-year wait filled with anticipation, speculation, and unwavering support, fans worldwide are celebrating the highly anticipated release of the latest album from BTS, the renowned global boy band. Titled “ARIRANG,” this album marks the group’s triumphant return following their completion of mandatory military service and successful solo endeavors.

Although the name ‘Arirang’ is familiar to many, its profound connection to Korean history is not widely known. This iconic song holds significant cultural importance in Korean heritage, with roots tracing back over 600 years. Often referred to as Korea’s unofficial national anthem, Arirang resonates with themes of longing, separation, and resilience, deeply ingrained in the hearts of the Korean people throughout generations.

In a historical context, in 1896, seven young Korean men embarked on a journey to North America during a period of reform in Korea. Facilitated by Korean diplomat Suh Kwang Bum, these students enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C., becoming pioneers among the first Koreans to pursue education in the United States.

During their time at Howard University, these students gained recognition for showcasing Korean folk songs at campus social gatherings. Their performances caught the attention of the local Washington newspaper, which described their music as “unique,” introducing Americans to the beauty of Korean melodies for the first time.

In a pivotal moment, American ethnologist Alice C. Fletcher invited the students to her residence in Washington, D.C., where she captured their rendition of Arirang on a wax cylinder in July 1896. Initially labeled as “Love Song: Ar-ra-rang” due to language barriers, this recording emerged as the earliest known audio documentation of the timeless tune.

Amidst the challenges of the Japanese colonial era, when Korean culture faced suppression, this recording served as a beacon of Korean identity during a tumultuous period. Recognizing its cultural significance, Arirang was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, further solidifying its enduring legacy. In 2015, South Korea’s Cultural Heritage Administration designated Arirang as a vital intangible cultural asset, preserving its heritage for future generations.

By selecting “ARIRANG” as the album title, BTS pays homage to this timeless Korean folk song that continues to inspire contemporary K-pop acts. The album embarks on a cultural odyssey, spotlighting BTS’s roots, identity, and their mission to showcase Korean culture on the global stage, reinforcing their commitment to celebrating heritage through music.
