A forthcoming release at the Amar Ekushey Boi Mela will showcase the captivating narratives behind some of Bangladesh’s most iconic films and contemporary music compositions by the esteemed lyricist Gazi Mazharul Anwar, publishers have confirmed. Titled “Alpo Kothar Golpo Gaan,” the book delves into the artistic inspiration behind a selection of lyrics penned by Anwar, renowned for his contribution of over 20,000 songs across various genres including film, patriotic, and modern Bangla music. In addition to his lyrical prowess, Anwar had a significant impact on Bangladesh’s popular culture landscape as a filmmaker, producer, and composer over several decades.
The publication, the sixth in a series by Dhaka-based publishing house Bhashachitra under the guidance of publisher Khandokar Monirul Islam, sheds light on the transformative journey of Bangladesh’s film industry post-independence, emphasizing the crafting of songs and collaborative efforts with prominent singers, composers, music directors, filmmakers, and technicians of that era. Offering personal anecdotes from different phases of the lyricist’s life, the book provides an intimate glimpse into the cultural milieu that shaped Anwar’s artistic creations.
Speaking on the publication, Anwar’s son, Sarfaraz Anwar Upol, emphasized the dual purpose of preserving and documenting his father’s musical legacy. “In honor of my late father, this book serves as a repository of his timeless songs,” he expressed. “Moreover, it aims to unveil the narratives behind many beloved tracks for readers to appreciate. With a tradition of releasing a new volume around his birthday each year, this latest installment will be unveiled at the upcoming book fair.”
Despite his passing on September 4, 2022, Anwar continues to hold a revered status as a pivotal figure in Bangladeshi music and cinema. His diverse repertoire of lyrics, spanning from patriotic hymns to film scores and contemporary compositions, resonates widely among listeners across different generations.
