“United Nations Endorses First Carbon Credits in Global Market”

-

The United Nations announced yesterday the endorsement of the initial carbon credits within a global market aimed at mitigating emissions. This mechanism, which has drawn scrutiny due to concerns about greenwashing, operates under the Paris climate agreement and enables companies and nations to compensate for their surplus emissions by funding projects that diminish greenhouse gases in other countries.

Detractors worry that if not implemented effectively, these programs could hinder global efforts to combat climate change by allowing entities to exaggerate their emissions reductions. The inaugural carbon credits granted within the new carbon market pertain to a project in Myanmar. This initiative involves the distribution of efficient wood-burning cookstoves that not only reduce harmful household air pollution but also alleviate pressure on forests, as indicated by the UN agency.
