A group of independent experts appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council has uncovered a vast collection of documents related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, indicating the presence of a far-reaching criminal network that may have committed acts amounting to crimes against humanity. The experts highlighted that the offenses detailed in the files released by the US Justice Department were carried out within a context of supremacist ideologies, racism, corruption, and severe misogyny. These crimes, according to the experts, demonstrated a disturbing trend of treating women and girls as commodities and stripping them of their humanity.
In a statement, the experts emphasized the gravity of the offenses, noting that the scale, systematic nature, and international scope of the atrocities against women and girls could potentially constitute crimes against humanity. They called for an independent and comprehensive investigation into the allegations presented in the documents, along with inquiries into the factors that enabled such crimes to persist unchecked for an extended period.
The US Justice Department has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter. In a significant development, a law passed by Congress in November with bipartisan backing mandates the disclosure of all Epstein-related files to the public. However, the UN experts expressed concerns about lapses in compliance and redaction errors that exposed sensitive information about over 1,200 victims identified in the released documents.
The experts criticized the limited transparency and scope of investigations, which they stated had retraumatized many survivors and subjected them to what they described as ‘institutional gaslighting.’ The release of documents by the Justice Department has unveiled Epstein’s connections to influential figures in politics, finance, academia, and business, both before and after his conviction in 2008 for soliciting an underage girl for prostitution.
Following his re-arrest on federal charges of sex trafficking of minors, Epstein was found dead by suicide in his prison cell in 2019.
