“Stay Cool and Hydrated: Essential Tips for Children in Summer”

-

As the scorching summer persists, staying adequately hydrated becomes a paramount challenge for all, including the most vigilant water-drinkers. Amidst this, children, who often resist the idea of consuming water, face a higher risk of dehydration. To combat this, it is essential to implement strategies that ensure sufficient fluid intake for children during the summer months.

Encouraging regular water breaks is crucial to maintain hydration levels throughout the day. Utilizing time-stamped water bottles can help track consumption and replenish fluids lost through perspiration. Monitoring the number of bottles or glasses consumed also aids in ensuring adequate hydration.

The optimal choice for hydration remains plain water, delivering pure and essential moisture to the body. Alternatively, infusing water with fruit slices can enhance taste without adding processed sugars. Cold milk serves as another hydrating option, particularly beneficial for those tolerant of lactose, as it not only quenches thirst but also provides calcium for strong teeth and bones. While fruit juices and powdered drinks are popular choices, they contain high sugar levels, with fruit juices being the preferable selection if consumed promptly.

Incorporating foods with high water content into children’s diets is beneficial for hydration. Watermelon, oranges, and vegetables like iceberg lettuce, celery, tomatoes, zucchini, spinach, and cucumbers are excellent choices to hydrate the body through digestion.

During the summer heat, it is advisable to allow children outdoor activities in the cooler mornings or late afternoons, ensuring they wear hats, apply sunscreen, and maintain hydration. The midday sun’s intensity can deplete moisture rapidly, especially in young and active individuals. To prevent heat-related illnesses, it is advisable to keep children indoors between 10:30 AM and 4:00 PM.

In hot and humid climates like Dhaka, dressing children in light-colored, loose cotton garments is essential to prevent heat-related issues. Sudden temperature changes, such as transitioning from outdoor heat to air-conditioned environments, should be minimized. Gradually cooling off before showering can help prevent potential discomfort.

Regular lukewarm to cool water baths aid in cleansing and refreshing children, removing accumulated sweat and dirt that can lead to skin irritations. Dark urine, headaches, dizziness, confusion, and other symptoms indicate potential heat exhaustion in children. Immediate action, such as moving them to a cool area, providing water, and offering comfort measures, should be taken. If symptoms persist, seeking medical attention is advised to address heat-related concerns promptly.
