Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman has declared plans to initiate public street demonstrations following a walkout from parliament due to the failure to reach a resolution on a motion regarding the convening of the Constitution Reform Council. In an evening briefing post-walkout, he mentioned that the protest strategy would be finalized in collaboration with other parties in the Jamaat-led alliance.
The walkout occurred around 5:40 pm after the question-answer session in the House when Shafiqur raised a point of order and announced the decision, leading opposition lawmakers to exit the parliament chamber. The opposition accused the government of attempting to undermine their proposal by introducing a similar notice on the matter.
Expressing disappointment, Shafiqur stated, “We are deeply surprised, hurt, and aggrieved. This unprecedented situation contrasts with past referendums in Bangladesh where the people’s voice was respected. Despite bipartisan support and voter endorsement, our proposal has been disregarded.” He emphasized the importance of resolving issues within the House to satisfy the public.
Highlighting the need to honor the people’s will, Shafiqur emphasized the alliance’s intention to engage with the electorate. He criticized the hindrance of public demands for reform and political transformation, labeling the situation as regrettable for the nation and the parliament.
The 11-party alliance is set to convene shortly to strategize their next steps and communicate their decisions to the media promptly.
