Dubai’s international airport, which manages over 1,000 flights daily, suffered damage during an Iranian retaliatory strike on various sites in the Arab Gulf states. Additionally, airports in Abu Dhabi and Kuwait were also impacted by the attacks.
Key airports in the region, including Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi, were shut down as Middle Eastern countries closed their airspace in response to the strikes and Iran’s actions. Flight maps displayed minimal air traffic over Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Israel, and Bahrain, with airlines from Europe and the Middle East announcing widespread flight cancellations.
Dubai and nearby Doha serve as crucial hubs for east-west air travel, channeling long-haul flights between Europe and Asia through a tightly coordinated network of connecting flights. The closure of these airports has far-reaching implications, prompting airlines globally to reroute or cancel flights.
John Strickland, an aviation analyst based in the UK, emphasized the substantial impact of the airport closures, highlighting the uncertainty faced by hundreds of thousands of stranded passengers worldwide. Major Gulf carriers like Emirates and Qatar Airways, significant cargo operators globally, are also affected by the disruptions.
Dubai Airports suspended all flight operations at Dubai International and Al Maktoum International until further notice, advising passengers against traveling during this period.
The US and Israel conducted a significant attack on Iran over the weekend, resulting in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and triggering retaliatory missile and drone strikes from Iran. This escalation raised concerns about a broader conflict in the Middle East, leading to extended airspace closures.
Eric Schouten, head of aviation security advisory Dyami, warned that airspace closures could persist for an extended duration. Airlines canceled approximately half of their flights to Qatar and Israel and around 28% of flights to Kuwait following the US and Israeli actions against Iran. Overall, about 24% of flights to the Middle East were canceled, according to preliminary Cirium data.
Due to the closure of airspace in the region, airlines had to divert flights around locations such as Larnaca, Jeddah, Cairo, and Riyadh. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) recommended that European airlines avoid the affected airspace due to ongoing military activities.
Passengers across Europe faced challenges due to the disruptions, with many stranded at airports and uncertain about their travel plans. Students on a college trip from Paris to Dubai found themselves stuck in Dubai, while travelers at Charles de Gaulle airport and Doha’s Hamad International Airport experienced flight cancellations and delays. Efforts were made to assist stranded passengers in making alternative arrangements.
