Israel initiated a fresh round of attacks on Tehran on Sunday, prompting Iran to retaliate with additional missile assaults. This escalation came on the heels of the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, causing heightened uncertainty in the Middle East and global economy.
The US and Israeli military actions, coupled with Iran’s response, reverberated across various industries such as shipping, air travel, and oil. Concerns over escalating energy prices and business disruptions in the Gulf region, a vital global trade route, were raised.
President Donald Trump stated that the objective of the strike was to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, curb its missile development, and address threats to the US and its allies. Trump, in an interview with the Atlantic magazine, revealed that Iran’s leadership expressed interest in dialogue, to which he agreed. However, Trump has not disclosed his long-term plans for Iran, which faces potential turmoil and regional implications due to power vacuum scenarios.
With the first US casualties reported, the critical Strait of Hormuz closed, and key Gulf cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha facing attacks, the risks associated with Trump’s decision to launch the attack became more apparent. A Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated that only a quarter of Americans approved of the operation. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, responsible for a significant portion of global oil supplies, could lead to price spikes at the gas pumps, impacting US consumers ahead of crucial midterm elections.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed to have targeted three US and UK oil tankers in the Gulf. Shipping data revealed numerous vessels, including oil and gas tankers, anchoring in nearby waters, with traders anticipating substantial increases in crude oil prices on Monday.
The ongoing airstrikes also severely disrupted global air travel, leading to the closure of major Middle Eastern airports, including Dubai, one of the busiest international aviation hubs. This marked one of the most significant aviation interruptions in recent years.
