“Iran’s Historical Identity: From Persia to Present”

-

As military actions led by the United States and Israel provoke responses from Iran, the historical significance of the nation formerly known as Persia is brought back into focus. The name Iran, however, has deeper roots in the region’s history and identity than the foreign designation of Persia.

The term Persia originated from ancient Greek, Persís, which came from Parsa, a region in the southwest where the Achaemenid Empire was established. This name, used by outsiders to refer to the vast empire, eventually became synonymous with the entire civilization.

On the other hand, the indigenous people of the Iranian plateau referred to their land as “Iran” or variations like Eran, rooted in the ancient Indo-Iranian Arya, meaning “noble” or “Aryan,” signifying the “land of the Aryans”. Despite successive indigenous dynasties retaining variations of this name in official titles and inscriptions, the Western world continued to predominantly refer to the region as Persia due to historical linguistic influences.

In the 20th century, amidst the rise of nationalism and modern statehood, the Iranian government, under Reza Shah Pahlavi’s rule, formally requested foreign entities to use the name Iran in diplomatic relations, aligning external identity with internal self-designation. This shift symbolized a declaration of sovereignty and connected the modern nation to its enduring cultural and linguistic heritage.

Although the term Persia persists in cultural and historical contexts, the official political and legal identity of the country has remained Iran. Despite the ongoing military tensions and conflicts involving Tehran, the world’s renewed interest in the name Persia serves as a reminder of the nation’s rich historical legacy and the significance of self-identification.

The events unfolding in 2026 underscore the complex historical layers that shape modern geopolitics, emphasizing the importance of names and identities rooted in centuries of history. Iran today embodies a profound cultural heritage and national identity that transcend immediate headlines, reflecting a continuum of tradition and resilience in the face of contemporary challenges. The transition from Persia to Iran in international diplomacy in 1935 marked not a break in identity but a reaffirmation of a historical legacy shaped by the self-assertion of its people.
