“Dhaka Court Sentences Woman to Death for 2019 Double Murder”

-

A woman has been sentenced to death by a Dhaka court for her involvement in the Dhanmondi double murder case that occurred in 2019. The verdict was delivered by Judge Tauhida Akter of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan and Sessions Judge Court-7.

The condemned individual, Surovi Akter, worked as a domestic help for the deceased Afroza Begum. Along with the death penalty, she has also been fined Tk 50,000, with the alternative of facing an additional five months of rigorous imprisonment in case of non-payment.

In contrast, Bachhu Mia, another house worker, was acquitted by the court as the charges against him could not be substantiated. The tragedy unfolded when the bodies of Afroza Begum, aged 65, and her housemaid Diti, aged 18, were discovered in a Dhanmondi residence on November 1, 2019.

Following the incident, a case was lodged at Dhanmondi Police Station on November 3, 2019. The police later filed a charge sheet against Surovi and Bachhu Mia on February 1, 2022.
