Instagram is set to discontinue support for end-to-end encrypted messaging starting May 8, 2026, as per a recent update from the company. Users who have chats that will be affected by this change will be provided with guidance on how to save any media or messages they want to preserve before the transition occurs, as outlined in the official blog post. For those using older versions of the app, updating may be necessary before they can proceed with downloading their content.
End-to-end encryption plays a crucial role in ensuring that only the individuals involved in a conversation can access messages or engage in calls. Instagram has emphasized that even Meta, the parent company, cannot intercept these communications. In encrypted chats, messages are secured with a unique key that can solely be unlocked by the devices participating in the discussion.
While Meta has not disclosed the specific rationale for this decision in the blog post, it remains uncertain whether the company plans to eliminate this feature from other messaging services like Facebook Messenger. However, Meta spokesperson Dina El-Kassaby Luce mentioned to The Verge that the discontinuation is attributed to the fact that “very few people” were utilizing end-to-end encryption in their direct messages.
