The half-marathon was a public display of the advancements in robotic mobility, with robots showcasing their ability to handle varied terrain and sustain movement over a long distance. Earlier this year, humanoid robots made headlines during China’s CCTV Spring Festival gala, where Unitree humanoids performed a martial arts routine alongside child performers.
Despite the impressive display, experts caution that the skills exhibited during the half-marathon do not directly translate to practical applications in industrial settings. Chinese robotics companies are still striving to develop artificial intelligence software that would allow humanoid robots to match the efficiency of human workers in factories. Challenges such as manual dexterity, real-world perception, and the ability to perform diverse tasks beyond repetitive motions remain obstacles to overcome.
China is actively pursuing policies such as subsidies and infrastructure investments to establish itself as a global leader in the humanoid robotics industry, according to a report by Reuters.
