A film screening commemorating Shaheed Dibosh and International Mother Language Day will kick off today at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of the University of Dhaka. The event will showcase politically relevant Bangladeshi films and contemporary documentaries over the course of two days.
Hosted by the Dhaka Film Club under the theme “Inspired by the spirit of Ekushey, let the new generation awaken,” the screening program will take place at the road-island premises of the Teacher-Student Centre, University of Dhaka until February 21. Screenings will be held daily at 7:00 pm and are free for the public to attend.
The inaugural evening will feature the screening of “Jibon Theke Neya,” a film directed by the renowned filmmaker Zahir Raihan in 1970. This film is widely recognized as a significant political allegory in Bangladeshi cinema, with its themes of authoritarianism and collective resistance resonating with the events of the Language Movement.
In addition to the classic film, a contemporary documentary will also be shown on the opening day.
On February 21, the organizers will showcase “Kalmilata,” directed by Shahidul Haque Khan, along with another contemporary documentary.
Barua Manojit Dhimon, the general secretary of Dhaka Film Club, stated that the aim of this initiative is to pay tribute to the language martyrs and introduce important Bangladeshi films to a new generation of viewers.
This event marks the first Ekushey-focused screening initiative by the organization, with support from the Department of Mass Communication under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Bangladesh Film Archive.
