The recent WT20I series in Sylhet has caused concern for the Bangladesh women’s team with only a month left before the Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales. Despite winning the 2018 Asia Cup, the team has not been consistent in T20 cricket.
Bangladesh has struggled to chase targets over 150 runs in T20Is despite playing numerous matches over the years. In the recent series against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh won all tosses but chose to field first, even though chasing has been a challenge for them. Captain Nigar Sultana Joty had a poor run, scoring only 20 runs in three innings, adding to worries.
Chief selector Sazzad Ahmed Shipon acknowledged the team’s difficulties but mentioned that the series was used for experimenting before the World Cup. Shipon highlighted the team’s lack of power-hitters and the need to adjust their batting strategy for better performance.
The final squad for the World Cup will be decided on May 5, with the possibility of the same squad from the tri-series in Scotland participating in the tournament. Bangladesh is scheduled to depart for Scotland on May 24 or 25 after a training camp in Mirpur focusing on match simulations.
A training camp is set to begin on May 12 for eight days, with the venue likely in Dhaka due to limited availability elsewhere. The women’s tri-series involving Bangladesh, Scotland, and the Netherlands will commence on May 28, and Bangladesh will kick off their World Cup journey against the Netherlands on June 14 in Birmingham.
