The Bangladesh government has established a specialized task force to evaluate the requirements for introducing PayPal services in the country, as per an official announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office on March 2nd. Heading the committee is Rehan Asif Asad, an advisor to the ministry of posts, telecommunications, and information technology. The team comprises key officials including the chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority, the governor of Bangladesh Bank, the finance division secretary, the National Board of Revenue chairman, and the information and communication technology division secretary who also acts as the member secretary.

The primary objective of the committee, as outlined in the notification, is to facilitate the initiation of PayPal services in Bangladesh efficiently. PayPal, a prominent global online payment platform extensively utilized for international transactions, particularly by freelancers, is the focus of this endeavor. Additionally, the committee has been assigned the responsibility of enhancing the administration of high-tech and software parks as well as ICT centers throughout the nation. It will also develop strategies to offer cost-effective workspaces for freelancers and tech professionals.

Furthermore, the committee will promote ICT training initiatives to nurture a skilled workforce for the technology sector. The notification mentions the possibility of recruiting additional members based on requirements. Over the years, freelancers and tech innovators in Bangladesh have advocated for access to global payment services like PayPal, emphasizing its potential to streamline international transactions and strengthen the connection between the country’s expanding digital workforce and the global market.
