Barrister Kayser Kamal, the deputy speaker of parliament, stated on Saturday that for Bangladesh to achieve a strong democracy, the parliament needs to become the focal point of political activities. He made these remarks as the chief guest at an Iftar event hosted by the Netrokona Journalist Forum-Dhaka in a capital city hotel. Kamal highlighted the vital role of a democratic system in upholding the rule of law and stressed that national development hinges on a foundation of lawfulness.
He emphasized that the establishment of human rights is closely tied to the presence of a rule of law. Kamal pointed out that societies and countries that have embraced democratic principles, human rights, and legal frameworks have made significant progress. Reflecting on Bangladesh’s history, he acknowledged the nation’s struggles with a prolonged period of authoritarian rule.
Regarding the February 12 election, the deputy speaker viewed it as a pivotal moment in advancing parliamentary democracy, a journey that was initiated under Khaleda Zia’s leadership. Kamal underscored the importance of safeguarding the democratic progress that parties like BNP represent to ensure a bright future for democracy in Bangladesh.
The event was chaired by Rafique Muhammad, the president of the organizing committee, and moderated by Shawkat Ali Khan Litho, the general secretary. Notable figures from various sectors in Netrokona also graced the occasion.
