The High Court has given the green light for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections scheduled for June 7 by dismissing a legal challenge against the election timetable and voter registry. Justices Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Md Ashif Hasan rejected the petition due to procedural flaws in its presentation. BCB’s legal counsel, Barrister Mahin M Rahman, confirmed that there are no legal obstacles to conducting the elections on June 7 following the court’s decision. He hailed this as a victory against attempts to halt the BCB elections. The petitioners, represented by Advocates Mohammod Hossain Lipu and Azim Uddin Patwary, had sought to halt the elections, citing discrepancies in the constitution regarding councillor nominations. However, BCB’s stance, represented by Barrister Mahin M Rahman, was that the ongoing election process adheres to the constitution’s requirements for fresh councillor nominations. With the election process well underway and 42 councillors having already voted through e-voting, the BCB argued that disrupting the process at this stage would be impractical. The BCB Election Commission had announced the election schedule on May 16, with June 7 set as the voting date. The draft voter list was published on May 17. The election will see 23 directors elected directly by councillors, with two additional directors nominated by the National Sports Council. The 25-member board will subsequently elect the BCB president from among its members. Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal cautioned that raising doubts about the election process, especially with ICC representatives monitoring the activities, could lead to international confusion.
