“Bangladesh and China Forge Garment Industry Partnership”

-

Bangladesh’s garment industry leaders and Chinese business representatives have agreed to collaborate on joint ventures, technology sharing, and sustainable manufacturing practices to attract more Chinese investments and enhance the nation’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector. The agreement was reached during a significant meeting between the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh (OCAIB) at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Dhaka.

The meeting, led by Inamul Haq Khan, BGMEA’s senior vice president, was attended by other BGMEA officials and a 13-member Chinese delegation headed by OCAIB President Felix Chang WYC. The discussions centered on key areas such as potential joint ventures, improving customs procedures, sustainability efforts, and technological advancements.

Both parties explored opportunities for Chinese investments and partnerships in Bangladesh’s RMG sector and discussed ways to support struggling factories through acquisitions and partnerships. They emphasized the importance of efficient customs processes to reduce delays and costs, as well as the integration of green technologies and automation in garment manufacturing.

The meeting also touched upon the potential for technical cooperation in implementing AI technologies and automated machinery to enhance the RMG sector’s readiness for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The OCAIB delegation expressed interest in establishing a carbon trading market in Bangladesh and proposed machinery exchange programs to modernize the industry.

However, the delegation raised concerns about bureaucratic hurdles and sought assistance from BGMEA to address these challenges. In response, BGMEA leaders pledged to engage with relevant authorities to resolve regulatory issues and facilitate partnerships between local entrepreneurs and Chinese investors.

Emphasizing Bangladesh’s focus on high-value and sustainable garment production, BGMEA leaders highlighted the benefits of closer collaboration with OCAIB in leveraging China’s expertise in technology and industry linkages. OCAIB President Felix Chang commended Bangladesh’s garment industry resilience and growth, reaffirming the association’s commitment to supporting the sector with new investments and technical assistance.
