Bangladesh and China Collaborate to Modernize Silk Sector

-

Bangladesh and China are set to enhance collaboration in research, technology, and knowledge exchange to modernize the traditional silk sector for improved productivity and sustainability, according to Md Shariful Alam, the state minister for textiles and jute. Alam made these comments as the keynote speaker at a sericulture research and development conference in Rajshahi, focusing on the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The state minister highlighted the government’s efforts to revive state-owned industries as outlined in its election pledges. In addition to reopening these facilities, the government aims to expand market reach and attract investments, both domestic and foreign, to the sector.

The conference, organized by the China-Bangladesh Silk Research Centre (CBSRC) in collaboration with the Bangladesh Sericulture Development Board and China’s Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, aimed to drive advancements across the silk value chain. Alam emphasized the importance of research and technological cooperation, citing China’s expertise in silk research and industrial development as beneficial for Bangladesh’s silk industry progress.

Alam outlined plans to enhance collaboration between Chinese research entities, universities, and Bangladesh’s Sericulture Development Board to develop high-yield mulberry varieties, improved silkworm breeds, disease control measures, advanced silk yarn production, quality testing, and value-added silk products.

Furthermore, the government intends to build stronger connections among researchers, farmers, entrepreneurs, and industrial players to facilitate the application of research outcomes at the grassroots level and create commercial prospects. Alam emphasized the integration of modern technology, skills enhancement, and increased investments to bolster the industry.

Recognizing Rajshahi’s historical significance as the “Silk City,” Alam highlighted the potential for the sector to drive rural employment, elevate farm incomes, empower women, and foster overall economic growth. He mentioned that Rajshahi Silk had already received geographical indication (GI) status, and efforts would be made to enhance its quality, product range, branding, and global market presence.

Alam stressed the importance of enhancing the silk industry’s environmental sustainability while elevating productivity and competitiveness. The conference was attended by various dignitaries, including Abu Sayeed Chand, a member of parliament from Rajshahi-3 constituency, Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, secretary to the textiles and jute ministry, Md Toufiq Al Mahmud, director general of the Bangladesh Sericulture Development Board, and Prof Nusrat Jahan Nipa, chief coordinator of CBSRC, alongside academics, researchers, businessmen, and senior ministry officials.
