US President Donald Trump commended the astronauts for their remarkable journey and expressed pride in their achievements, looking forward to future space missions. The Artemis II mission marked Nasa’s inaugural crewed mission aimed at establishing a sustained lunar presence, with plans for a Moon base to support Mars exploration.
The nine-day, one-hour, 31-minute, and 35-second journey, dubbed a 10-day mission by Nasa, saw the astronauts travel the furthest from Earth, covering 252,756 miles (406,771 kilometers). Nasa aims to return astronauts to the Moon by 2028, coinciding with the end of Trump’s potential second term, although doubts linger on the readiness of lunar landers from SpaceX and Blue Origin for this timeline.
Meanwhile, China is progressing towards its own lunar mission, targeting a 2030 timeline for sending astronauts to the Moon.
