Every day, the streets of Dhaka are bustling with crowds of people and vehicles, exuding impatience and indifference. Amidst the chaos of auto-rickshaws navigating through the traffic, there is a unique story unfolding. A woman sits behind the wheel, not as a statement but out of necessity due to life’s circumstances.
Shahida, a pseudonym for the woman, moved to the city with her two daughters following her husband’s passing. With no safety net to rely on, she bore the weight of responsibilities and the need to survive.
“After my husband’s death, I brought my daughters here as there was no one else to care for us. I had to pave our own way to change our fate,” she shared.
Initially, Shahida explored other job opportunities, but opportunities were limited, often hindered by educational barriers that closed doors before she could even reach them. Driving an auto-rickshaw wasn’t an obvious choice but became her sole path forward.
After six months, Shahida realized that the road symbolized more than just traffic; it represented resilience and exhaustion. Male drivers often made derogatory comments or tried to intimidate her, reminding her of her perceived place in a male-dominated environment. Despite these challenges, she persevered because giving up was not an option.

This year, she enrolled her eldest daughter in a government school, a simple achievement taken for granted by many but a significant step for Shahida. It signified a shifting future, demonstrating that progress could be made gradually, one step at a time.
“I aim for my daughters to receive an education so they can be self-reliant,” Shahida emphasized, highlighting her grounded and urgent aspirations.
Her goal was not grandiose but practical – to earn a living, provide food, and ensure her children had the essentials. She believed perceptions were evolving, focusing less on the driver’s gender and more on their driving skills. This quiet optimism hinted at a subtle transformation in societal attitudes.
Undeterred by stares, comments, or skepticism, Shahida remained resolute. “I disregard others’ opinions and will persist in my work,” she asserted.
