Malaysia Explores Boosting Scholarships for Bangladeshi Students

-

Malaysia has shown interest in potentially increasing scholarship opportunities for Bangladeshi students in both current and upcoming higher education initiatives. This commitment was expressed by Malaysian Minister for Higher Education Zambry Abdul Kadir during a recent meeting with Prime Minister’s Adviser on Education, Labour, and Employment Mahdi Amin.

The meeting, which also included Minister for Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Ariful Haque Chowdhury, aimed to enhance collaboration in higher education, research partnerships, skill enhancement, and workforce mobility. Key discussions revolved around expanding scholarships and enhancing the integration of Bangladeshi students into Malaysian society.

Mahdi highlighted the importance of providing Bangladeshi students and graduates with exposure to professional development opportunities. In response, Minister Zambry welcomed the proposal and expressed interest in exploring frameworks that align with Malaysia’s international education policies.

Furthermore, Mahdi emphasized the significance of fostering university-to-university partnerships, expanding academic exchange programs, and establishing joint educational initiatives supported by Malaysian institutions. The focus was on ensuring transparent selection processes and long-term sustainability.

The need for robust institutional mechanisms to support student inclusion, community engagement, and access to essential services was stressed by Mahdi. This is to enable Bangladeshi students to not only excel academically but also thrive within Malaysian society.

Currently, Malaysia hosts more than 11,000 Bangladeshi students, primarily in private institutions. The discussions between the two parties also touched upon broadening the recognition of qualifications, implementing joint degree programs, facilitating distance learning, and offering flexible education pathways that meet the demands of the labor market.
