An incident this afternoon resulted in the tragic death of an eight-year-old boy who was struck by a vehicle in the convoy of Cox’s Bazar-2 (Maheshkhali–Kutubdia) MP Alamgir Mohammad Mahfuzullah Farid in Badarkhali of Chakaria upazila. The victim, identified as Md Khaled Bin Walid, was the child of Amanul Islam and Sumaiya from Kabirer Ghat in Techchipara, according to police reports. Khaled, a second-grade student at a local madrasa, was fatally injured around 4:30pm near Badarkhali Fazil Madrasa when he was hit by the third vehicle in the lawmaker’s convoy while attempting to cross the road to a nearby shop.
Chakaria Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Mohammad Monir Hossain, indicated that the accident did not involve the MP’s personal vehicle but rather a different vehicle in the convoy. Witnesses reported that the child was struck while crossing the road to reach a shop. Following the incident, an angry crowd intercepted the vehicle at Ferryghat, returned it to the scene, and vandalized it, as the MP’s car had already departed the location. Although no formal case had been filed as of 9:00pm, the police had taken custody of the vehicle.
MP Farid, when contacted, confirmed the tragic event and described it as deeply saddening. He clarified that the vehicle involved was rented for election campaign purposes and was unoccupied at the time of the accident. The driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the collision.
