Police detained a young individual this afternoon in Nekmarad Bazar of Thakurgaon’s Ranishankoil upazila over accusations of “offending religious sentiments” through a Facebook post. The 19-year-old suspect, a resident of Nekmarad Parkunda village and a student at a local college, was apprehended following a complaint.
According to Rahmatullah Rony, the sub-inspector of Ranishankoil Police Station and the case’s investigating officer, the accused allegedly made a controversial Facebook post at 9:08 am that stirred unrest among the community. Upon receiving reports, law enforcement officers located and arrested the suspect at a cattle market in Nekmarad Bazar later in the day.
In response to the incident, a local named Mehedi Hasan lodged a complaint against the accused at the police station. During initial questioning, the youth denied authoring the post, asserting that it was a setup and he was unaware of how it was posted from his Facebook account. He further explained that upon realizing the situation, he removed the post and conducted a live session on Facebook to clarify the misunderstanding.
The investigating officer mentioned that the case would undergo IT forensic analysis to determine the truth, providing clarity on the matter. Following the arrest, the accused was presented before a court in the evening, where Senior Judicial Magistrate Tahmidur Rahman remanded him into custody, as confirmed by Court Inspector Md Belal Hossain of Thakurgaon.
