Former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, was remanded for five days by a Dhaka court in connection with the killing of furniture trader Mohammad Delowar Hossain during the 2024 July Uprising. The courtroom was filled as both the prosecution and defense presented their arguments, with Mamun Khaled appearing mostly silent but visibly anxious throughout the proceedings. Despite being handcuffed, he remained composed, occasionally raising his hand and engaging with his lawyer.
The court session commenced with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddique Azad presiding over the case as Mamun Khaled was brought in under strict security measures. The investigating officer requested a seven-day remand, which was supported by Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi, citing Mamun Khaled’s alleged involvement in ordering the shooting of students during protests in Mirpur and his actions during the 1/11 army-backed caretaker government.
In response, defense lawyer Nazrul Islam Khan argued that Mamun Khaled was not connected to the killing and should be granted bail. Mamun Khaled himself intervened during the defense’s presentation, refuting the prosecution’s claims and emphasizing his support for the July Uprising. He highlighted his role as the former vice-chancellor of Bangladesh University of Professionals and denied any involvement in the events leading to Delowar Hossain’s death.
Addressing allegations related to his tenure at DGFI, Mamun Khaled defended his actions and emphasized his presence in the country despite the absence of other former DGFI chiefs. Despite his rebuttals, the magistrate approved a five-day remand for further investigation.
The case was initiated by Delowar Hossain’s widow, Liza, who lodged a complaint with Mirpur Model Police Station, accusing 74 individuals. Mamun Khaled was arrested as a suspect based on police reports linking him to the incident where Delowar was fatally shot in the Mirpur-10 area during the July Uprising in 2024. He succumbed to his injuries at City Care General Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka, on July 21 of the same year.
