Russian FM Cautions US Against Iran Strike

-

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a public interview on Wednesday, expressed concerns over potential repercussions of a new US strike on Iran. He emphasized the importance of exercising restraint to reach a resolution that allows Iran to continue its nuclear program peacefully. Lavrov’s remarks came after US and Iranian negotiators engaged in indirect discussions in Geneva to defuse escalating tensions between the two nations.

Addressing the situation, Lavrov highlighted the risks associated with military actions on Iran’s nuclear facilities, stressing the need to avoid further escalation. He observed the reactions from Arab countries and Gulf monarchies in the region, noting the shared desire to prevent a further escalation that could lead to a dangerous situation.

Lavrov cautioned that escalating tensions could reverse the progress made in recent years, particularly the improved relations between Iran and neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, the White House advised Iran to consider striking a deal with the United States to navigate the current situation wisely.

Amidst these developments, the United States military was reportedly on standby for a potential strike on Iran, pending a final decision from President Trump. The UN nuclear watchdog chief acknowledged progress in the recent talks between Iran and the United States but emphasized the urgency of finding a solution promptly.

A senior US official disclosed that Iran was expected to present a written proposal to address the standoff with the United States following the negotiations in Geneva. Additionally, US national security advisers convened at the White House to ensure that all military forces in the region would be ready by mid-March.

The United States has been pushing for Iran to abandon its nuclear program, a demand that Iran has consistently rejected, asserting its pursuit of peaceful nuclear enrichment. Lavrov underscored the importance of Arab countries signaling to Washington the necessity of reaching an agreement that respects Iran’s legitimate rights and ensures a peaceful nuclear program.

Lavrov reiterated Russia’s commitment to maintaining close communication with Iranian leaders, expressing confidence in Iran’s genuine intention to resolve the issue while upholding the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. In a separate incident, British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper condemned Iran’s sentencing of a British couple to 10 years in prison on espionage charges, vowing to continue advocating for their release. Craig and Lindsay Foreman were accused by Iran of gathering intelligence in various parts of the country.
