US President Donald Trump expressed his desire for a swift resolution between Ukraine and Russia as peace discussions mediated by the US kicked off in Geneva. Trump emphasized the urgency for Ukraine to engage in negotiations promptly during his remarks to journalists on Air Force One en route to Washington.
Both Ukraine and Russia delegates convened in Geneva for two days of talks facilitated by the US, with the primary focus being the contentious issue of land. Trump is actively pushing for Moscow and Kyiv to come to an agreement to bring an end to the largest conflict in Europe since 1945. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the immense pressure his country faces to make concessions during the peace talks.
Prior to the discussions, Russia conducted significant airstrikes in multiple regions of Ukraine, causing extensive damage to infrastructure in Odesa, leaving tens of thousands without essential utilities such as heat and water. Additionally, a drone strike by Russia in eastern Ukraine resulted in the tragic deaths of three energy workers near Sloviansk, as reported by Kyiv.
Zelensky called upon Ukraine’s allies to escalate pressure on Russia to achieve a genuine and fair peace agreement through stricter sanctions and increased military support. Trump, when questioned about his expectations for the Geneva talks, specifically referenced Ukraine, underscoring the importance of swift action from all parties involved to advance towards a resolution.
The talks in Geneva, which followed earlier negotiations between US and Iranian officials in the same city, hold significant importance in resolving the ongoing conflict. Trump reiterated the urgency for Ukraine to actively participate in the negotiations for progress to be made swiftly.
