“Street Performance Honors 1952 Language Movement Heroes”

-

On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, a street performance named “Craving for Language” was presented at the University of Dhaka, honoring linguistic rights, freedom of speech, and the heroes of the 1952 Language Movement.

The enactment took place today (Saturday) at 11 am near the Raju Sculpture on the campus, organized by the Dhaka University Drama Club. The script and direction were handled by Mubashshir Mahmud Nibir, a second-year student at DU.
The production commenced with actors in black attire marching onto the stage, carrying signs that demanded “Bangla as the official language.” Using a variety of theatrical methods, the essence of the Language Movement was depicted to the beat of the renowned poem Karar Oi Louho Kopat, Bhenge Fel Kor Re Lopaat.

In addition to exploring the historical events of the 1952 movement, the play emphasized the pivotal role of the University of Dhaka in the fight and raised concerns about the current generation’s stance on the Bangla language.

Post-performance, director Mubashshir Mahmud Nibir expressed, “Political authority appreciates language when it remains silent. However, when language begins to challenge and protest against injustices, efforts are made to silence it. This is where our play commences.”
Co-director Nusrat Jahan Sadia remarked, “We have yet to fully appreciate the beauty of the Bangla language. The day we recognize that International Mother Language Day is globally observed due to the Bangla struggle, we will no longer undervalue our own language.”

Reacting to the show, Kathak Bishwas, the literary secretary of Jagannath Hall Parliament, noted, “In recent times, there has been a decline in theatrical performances in the country. Given this context, a program centered around Ekushey is undeniably significant.”
He further highlighted that the endeavor, led by university students themselves, sets a positive precedent for the future of arts and cultural activities in Bangladesh and is anticipated to motivate others to engage in similar initiatives.
