Singer Asif Akbar Acquitted After Eight-Year Legal Battle

-

After a lengthy legal battle spanning eight years, singer Asif Akbar has been cleared of charges related to the alleged possession of foreign liquor. Following the verdict, Asif Akbar expressed relief, stating that the accusations were unfounded and expressing gratitude for finally receiving justice.

The ruling was issued by Judge Ayesha Akter Moushumi of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court in Dhaka on Monday, where Asif Akbar was present. The singer’s defense attorney, Pradip Kumar Debnath, confirmed the acquittal.

In response to the verdict, Asif Akbar stated, “I am thankful that the false allegations have been dismissed. This legal journey began during Ramadan, and it concludes in the same month. I am content and pleased. Throughout the past eight years, I have diligently attended court proceedings without seeking any undue influence or turning it into a political matter. My sole aim was to seek justice, and I have fought this case as well as my previous ones, leading to this acquittal.”

He added, “Growing up as the son of a lawyer, I have always respected the court’s rules and procedures. Hence, I refrained from discussing these matters publicly. The distress endured by my family, fans, and well-wishers over the past eight years has now been alleviated with the court’s decision. This brings immense joy to both me and my family.”

The case originated from the alleged discovery of four bottles of foreign liquor at Asif Akbar’s office in the capital on June 6, 2018, as reported by law enforcement officials. Subsequently, on July 23, 2019, Prashanta Kumar Sikdar, a sub-inspector of the CID’s Cyber Investigation Unit, lodged a complaint at Tejgaon Police Station accusing the singer of possessing liquor without a license.

After an extensive investigation, the charge sheet was filed on October 13 of the same year. The trial commenced on November 25, 2024, with the court framing charges. Following the testimony of three witnesses, the court reached a decision on Monday, acquitting Asif Akbar and concluding the prolonged legal process.
